Curious about Cold Plunges? Whether you’re exploring your options, comparing features, or just dipping your toes in—this is your go-to spot for all things Cold Plunge from the experts at Mainely Tubs.
A cold plunge tub is specifically designed to hold cold water around 40 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Some are basic buckets filled with ice, while others, like the Vigor cold plunge made by HotSpring Spas carried at Mainely Tubs, are more modern in style and have self-cooling systems that filter, chill, and maintain the water.
Typically, cold plunging requires you to submerge your body into cold water for a short period of about 1−3 minutes.
What are the health benefits of cold plunging?
Cold plunging offers a variety of health benefits including helping to reduce muscle soreness, allowing fast recovery from workouts, boosting your mood and mental clarity, building stress resilience, and so much more.
Is a cold plunge safe for everyone to use?
Cold plunges are beneficial for many people, but ideally cold plunges are best for healthy adults with no major health issues. If you have any health conditions you should always consult with your doctor about whether cold plunging is safe for you.
How often should I use a cold plunge for recovery or wellness?
If you are just starting to incorporate cold plunging into your wellness routine, you should start with 2-4 sessions per week aiming for a total of 11 minutes per week. You should always pay attention to how your body reacts and not push yourself.
What’s the difference between a cold plunge and an ice bath?
There are some key differences between a cold plunge and an ice bath.
The Perfect Temperature: With a cold plunge you are allowed more temperature control. With an ice bath, the temperature depends entirely on how much ice you add—and it might not stay cold for as long.
Ready When You Are: An ice bath requires you to take time for setup and to get ice into the tub every time you want to use it, while cold plunges stay ready to enjoy.
What’s the difference between contrast therapy and cold plunging?
Cold plunging consists of sitting in very cold water to help relieve sore muscles, boost your mood and speed up recovery. Contrast therapy uses the contrast of hot and cold temperatures to improve circulation and promote deeper relaxation.
What temperature should a cold plunge tub be?
While the ideal temperature varies based on your comfort level and experience, for therapeutic benefits, cold plunge temperatures typically range from 45-60°F.
How long should I stay in a cold plunge tub?
If you are a beginner to cold plunging, here’s a good starting point for your routine:
Aim for 1-2 minutes with temperatures between 45 – 60°F to start.
As your tolerance increases, gradually add to the time you are in the tub and lower the temperature.
Once you are using it regularly, work towards 2-4 sessions a week (11 minutes total) to receive optimal benefits.
If you have any underlying health conditions you should always consult with your doctor before starting any cold plunge routines.
Can I use the cold plunge daily, and are there best practices?
The amount you cold plunge is based on a variety of factors including health, tolerance, and goals. You should always consult with your doctor prior to starting any cold plunging routine.
Is cold plunging good for inflammation, pain relief, or mental clarity?
Cold plunging is a great way to help relieve sore muscles. The cold temperatures help muscles recover faster and work to reduce soreness, which is why a lot of athletes like taking a plunge after their workouts. Additionally, cold shock can help enhance your mood and help support improved mental focus.
For even more benefits, pair your cold plunge with a sauna for contrast therapy.
Are there risks or side effects of using cold water therapy at home?
You should always consult with your doctor before starting any cold plunge routines, especially if you have an underlying health condition.
What’s the difference between passive (ice-based) and active (chiller-powered) cold plunges?
There are some notable differences to keep in mind between these types of cold plunges.
Passive (ice-based) cold plunge:
Requires Ice: You have to manually fill the tub with ice.
Inconsistent Temperature: The water temperature depends on how much ice you use and how quickly it melts, which leads to less consistent temperatures.
Active (Chiller-Powered) Plunge:
Built-in System: This type is powered by a chiller and uses a built-in cooling system to keep the water cold and circulating.
Consistent Control: You can set the temperature, and the system will ensure it remains consistent throughout your session.
Zero Ice Required: You don’t have to constantly run ice over to the unit to keep it cool.

Gone are the days when cold plunging was just for elite athletes. More and more people are discovering the mood-boosting, recovery-supporting effects of deliberate cold exposure. If you’ve been curious about how to maximize recovery, boost mood, or just feel more refreshed, dialing in the right temperature and timing protocol makes all the difference.
But if you’re new to the chill, the big question is: How cold should the water be, and how long do I need to stay in? The best results come from knowing your goals and matching them to temperature and timing ranges that feel effective and sustainable for you.
Whether you’re plunging for better focus or faster muscle repair, keep reading for your guide to finding the perfect routine.
Safety First
Before you plunge, remember this: Deliberate cold exposure is a physiological shock—consult your healthcare provider before starting, especially if you have heart issues or underlying health conditions.
Focus on Your Breath. When you first enter the cold, your body will want to gasp. Focus on slow, controlled breaths to manage the initial cold shock.
Start Slow and Listen. Get out before you start shivering uncontrollably or feel pain. Consistency is more important than intensity.
Remember, it’s not about “the colder the better” or “stay as long as possible”—It’s about a routine that will help you reach a specific wellness goal.
The Goals
Follow the protocol that fits the outcome you’re looking for.
1. Energy, Alertness, and Mood Boost
This goal is all about increasing your dopamine levels and activating your nervous system for the day.
Temperature Target: 50°F to 60°F
Time Goal: 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Keep it short and sharp for maximum wakefulness.
Best Timing: Morning/Early Day. This provides a surge of energy and focus that can last for hours.
2. Muscle Recovery and Inflammation Reduction
This is the classic post-workout protocol, focused on reducing soreness and helping your muscles recover faster.
Temperature Target: 50°F to 59°F
Time Goal: 2 to 5 minutes. Beginners can start with shorter sessions, working up slowly as they acclimate.
Best Timing: This depends on your workout. For endurance (running or cardio), sooner is better—ideally within 1 hour. For strength training, it is best to wait at least 2 to 4 hours to ensure you don’t interfere with the muscle-building process.
3. Relaxation, Sleep, and Stress Reduction
This goal requires a gentler approach to calm the nervous system and lower your core body temperature before bed.
Temperature Target: 55°F to 60°F, sticking to the warmer end of this range can provide a gentler session depending on your personal tolerance.
Time Goal: 2 to 5 minutes. A shorter, less intense session at a warmer temperature can be very calming.
Best Timing: 1 to 2 Hours Before Bed. The rapid cooling followed by the body’s natural rewarming process can help drop your core temperature and signal that it’s time to sleep.
Maximize Your Benefits with Contrast Therapy
If you really want to boost circulation and recovery, try Contrast Therapy. This involves alternating between hot and cold exposure, and it’s especially easy if you have a hybrid sauna or a hot tub right next to your cold plunge pool.
Here is a popular contrast protocol:
Heat Phase: Spend 10–15 minutes in your hot tub (around 102°F to 104°F) or sauna.
Cold Phase: Immediately switch to the cold plunge (around 55°F to 59°F) for 2–5 minutes.
Repeat: Cycle between the two (2 or 4 full cycles).
Consistency is Your Secret Weapon
The single most important rule is consistency. Don’t try to go to the coldest setting on day one. Start in the mid-50s for a minute, and make it a habit you can sustain. Some experts suggest aiming for a total of 11 minutes of cold exposure per week, divided across three or four sessions.
Ready to find your perfect protocol?
The Vigor cold plunge at Mainely Tubs can maintain your perfect plunge temperature year-round, giving you the power to find a consistent protocol that works for your body and your goals.
Stop by your local Mainely Tubs showroom and our team of experts will help you choose a system that makes cold plunging a safe, easy, and consistent part of your wellness routine.

1. Speeds Up Muscle Recovery
If you’re an athlete or simply love staying active, cold water therapy could be your secret weapon. The icy plunge helps ease muscle soreness by reducing inflammation and flushing out waste like lactic acid. As your body warms back up, increased blood flow supports muscle recovery so you’re ready for your next workout.
2. Reduces Inflammation and Joint Pain
By lowering the temperature of your tissues and slowing down inflammatory processes, cold plunge therapy can relieve soreness and stiffness in joints. This makes it a great option for managing discomfort from conditions like arthritis or tendonitis. While it’s not a cure, integrating regular cold water immersion into your wellness routine may provide noticeable relief.
3. Boosts Energy and Mental Clarity
Ever splashed cold water on your face to wake up in the morning? Imagine amplifying that effect with a full-body cold plunge. Cold immersion stimulates norepinephrine and dopamine release—neurotransmitters tied to focus, alertness, and mood elevation. Whether you’re looking for a natural pick-me-up or a way to sharpen your mind, cold water therapy can help you start your day with clarity and vigor.
4. Strengthens the Immune System
Cold plunges can even play a role in supporting your immune system. Regular exposure to cold water is believed to support immune function and overall resilience. While it’s not a cure-all, it’s a fun and invigorating way to complement a healthy lifestyle.
5. Improves Circulation and Cardiovascular Health
The dramatic temperature change during a cold plunge acts as a workout for your blood vessels. First, cold water triggers vasoconstriction (narrowing of blood vessels). Then, as you warm up, vasodilation (expansion of blood vessels) occurs, which boosts circulation. Improved blood flow not only supports overall heart health but also enhances oxygen delivery to muscles and tissues, which may aid recovery and general well-being. Adding hot-cold cycles—known as contrast therapy—can take these benefits to another level.
6. Supports Metabolism and Fat Burning
When you’re exposed to cold water, your body activates brown fat—a specialized type of fat that burns energy to generate heat. Regular cold plunges can help regulate energy balance and support weight management alongside an active lifestyle. While cold therapy isn’t a replacement for exercise or balanced nutrition, it can be a complementary tool for maintaining metabolic health.
7. Enhances Sleep and Reduces Stress
Stress relief and better sleep are two surprising benefits of cold plunge therapy. Immersing yourself in cold water can lower cortisol (your primary stress hormone) while signaling your nervous system to relax. This calming effect can improve the quality of your sleep, helping you wake up feeling refreshed. For many cold plungers, this practice becomes an evening ritual to wind down after a busy day.
Tips for Getting Started
Intimidated by the idea of jumping right into a tub of ice cold water? Don’t worry—you can ease into it. Here are some tips for getting started:
Start with Cold Showers: Wrap up your shower with 30–60 seconds of cold water. It might feel shocking at first, but your body will adapt over time.
Find Your Comfort Zone: Begin with water temperatures between 50°F and 60°F and work your way toward the colder end (39°F to 50°F) as you get used to it.
Focus on Your Breathing: Deep, steady breaths are your best friend—stay calm and let the cold feel manageable.
Stick With It: Consistency is key. Try cold immersion 2–3 times a week and see how your body responds.
The Takeaway
Cold plunge therapy isn’t just the latest wellness trend—it’s a simple way to refresh your mind and body. Whether you’re easing sore muscles, clearing your mind, or winding down for the day, cold water immersion offers benefits that go beyond an eye-opening dip.
Whether you’re adding cold showers to your morning routine or setting up a dedicated cold plunge tub at home, this practice invites you to embrace the cold and discover a more energized, resilient version of yourself. So next time you’re in need of a mental or physical reset, consider taking the plunge—it might just be the invigorating boost you didn’t know you needed.
